Planetarium in the Smolyan town

The Planetarum of the town of Smolyan has been operating for 30 years. The Planetarium building has beautiful and original architecture. The facility is equipped with modern technics, produced by the Carl-Zeiss-Jena German company. The Planetarium also disposes of a small observatory, which is equipped with several telescopes, the biggest of which has a diameter of 15 cm. In clear weather it may be used by the visitors for observation of the Sun. Another attraction of the Planetarium is its exceptionally precise Sun Clock, which is located on a small platform in the garden of the facility.


The historical museum in Smolyan


The historical museum in Smolyan is the oldest and the biggest in the Middle Rhodopes. It was founded in 1935 and its aim is to explore, study, preserve and popularise the uniqueness of its artistic value and its historical important heritage of the people, inhabiting the central part of the Rhodopes. A specially designed buildings house of the museum overlooking both - the old and the new town of Smolyan. It has a panoramic view to the peaks - Karlak, Perelik and Sokolitza, praised in many songs, dedicated to the Rhodope mountain. A visit to the historical museum is the way to get to know the thousand years old history of the Middle Rhodopes, preserved throughout the Ages and onto the future. If you are interested in history, if you love it, but you are on a business trip, skiing or on holiday, spare some time and visit the history museum of Smolyan. It takes only 30 minutes to feel the spirit of Rhodope mountain.


Rhodope drama theatre


The theatre was founded in 1951. It has a permanent ensemble of 6 actors and a three-hall building. The larger hall has 674 seats and the smaller ones have 99 and 60 seats. The theatre has a diverse repertoire spectrum - from classical drama to contemporary plays. Seven productions are done yearly and about 85 performances are presented per season. The theatre is financed by Bulgaria's Ministry of Culture and by the Smolyan Municipality. National Astronomical Observatory – Rojen


The Rojen National Astronomical Observatory is located in the Rhodopes Mountain, on top of the Rojen peak (1750 m above sea level), approximately 25 km away from the town of Smolyan. The Rojen Observatory is a 2-m high Richie-Chretien-Cube optic reflector system, produced by the Carl-Zeiss-Jena German company. To this day that still is the biggest telescope in Southeastern Bulgaria. The second telescope of the Rojen Observatory is a 60 cm photometric Kasagren telescope. It is provided with a one-channel, computer-controlled UBV photometer. The third telescope of the Rojen Observatory is a 50/70 cm Smidth telescope, used for wide-spectrum observations..
